He worked in several violin departments before becoming the manager of Simson & Frey's violin department. In 1932, he teamed up with Max Scherl to buy the Simson & Frey firm, renaming it Scherl & Roth, which later became the largest supplier of string instruments and accessories in the US. After World War II, Roth brought skilled violin makers from Europe to Cleveland, Ohio, to establish techniques and standards for providing fine, affordable school instruments in large quantities.
